You can find much information on breast cancer including treatments, ways to prevent it and things that either increase or decrease the risk of development. You can also find nutritional tips, exercise tips and many support groups. However what is rare is information summarizing the history of breast cancer.

Breast cancer was first discovered by the ancient Egyptians, who noted that the disease was tumors or ulcers around the breast. They also concluded at the time that there was no treatment for it beyond removal or cauterization.

Later on, doctors established a link between breast cancer and the lymph nodes. French surgeon Jean Petit and Scotsman Benjamin Hall were the first to actually remove the nodes, tissue and muscle.

The world’s first mastectomy was performed by Dr. William Halsted. This procedure became known as the Halsted Radical Mastectomy and was a popular procedure until 1970.

It should be noted that breast cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer, behind non-melanoma skin cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer. This cancer is most prevalent in women in the Unite States and statistics show that breast cancer accounts for 1% of deaths world wide. There is a one in eight chance that women will develop breast cancer and a 3% chance they will die from it. Experts agree that this is due mostly to lifestyle choices, mental and emotional stress, dietary deficiencies as well as hormone treatment, such as breast augmentation.

Steps that can help prevent breast cancer are numerous and easy to implement. They can include dietary restrictions (such as cutting out junk or “comfort” food), an exercise regimen, increasing one’s fiber, fruit and vegetable intake and focusing on positive thoughts, habits and actions.

The greatest weapon against breast cancer is you, the health of your body, mind and soul.
