Introduction:
Breast lift is designed to improve breast ptosis (droop). This surgery may or may not beperformed with breast augmentation (placement or implant). It is also done to increasevolume and improve breast shape.
Reasons for undergoing a breast lift:
1. Some of the candidates have breasts that are
pendulous and for a satisfactory size.
2. Breast that lack substance or firmness
3. Nipples and areolas that point downwards, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease.
4. Loss of elasticity, weight loss, pregnancy andbreast ?feeding affect the shape and firmness of the breasts.
Breasts that are large and heavy can be lifted but the results may notbe as long lasting as when it is done on smaller breasts. A breast liftcan be performed at any age. But one has to wait until breastdevelopment has stopped. Pregnancy and breast-feeding may havesignificant effect on the breasts surgery will not affect your abilityto breast-feed. This should be discussed with your surgeon.
Your personal consultation:
During your personal consultation on breast lift, you will be asked about yourdesired breast shape and size. Your plastic surgeon will ask you how your nipplesand areolas will be repositioned. Mention any improvementto be seen in your breast.
Evaluation by plastic surgeon:Plastic surgeon will examine your breasts, takes measurementsconditions, drug allergies, medical treatments received, previoussurgeries including breast biopsies and medications that you take. Yourcomplete medical history should be provided. If at all there was anyweight loss, your weight should be stabilized before the surgery.
Risks involved:
There are always risks involved in surgery. So it is same here inbreast lift surgery. Significant complications from breast liftsare infrequent. Thousands of women go through surgery withoutexperiencing major problems and are pleased with the results.Following a breast lift surgery, sometimes the breasts may not beperfectly symmetrical or the nipple may vary slightly. Minoradjustments can be made at a later time. Permanent loss of sensation inthe nipple or areas of breast skin may occur rarely. Revisional surgerymay be helpful where incisions have not healed poorly.
Surgical procedure:
Full breast lift:
This procedure involves an incision across the base of the breast aswell as incisions around the areola and an incision between the areolaand the base of the breast. Maximal correction of the breast shape ispossible with this but at the cost of more scarring.
Modified breast lift:
This procedure uses a step known as Benelli breast lift. A popular formof this is known for only an incision around the areola. Less scarringcomes with less correction of the breast?s shape. Benelli proceduresare frequently performed within the breast augmentation. But thisprocedure is criticized because of the tendency to reduce projection ofthe breast.
There are some realities which cannot be escaped. The aging breasttissue may not allow lasting correction to overcome surgicalcorrection.
